Nine Clients Placed in Permanent Housing Since PNS Blitz
Presbyterian Night Shelter is successful in its intensive housing program

Fort Worth, Texas — Six homeless clients will be moving into their own apartments by the end of March, joining nine other clients who have already been placed into permanent housing since November.

The Presbyterian Night Shelter, along with the Mental Health and Mental Retardation center of Tarrant County, has teamed up to place clients ages 55 and older quickly and provide them with support services.

J.V. Owens, who has stayed on and off at the Shelter since 1987, is part of the program. Owens has been homeless for 40 years and will move into an apartment in March, said Nichole Henry, Presbyterian Night Shelter lead case manager.

It will be Owens' first stable home since he was 22 years old.

"It's been 40 years of sleeping on the street and staying in shelters," he said. "I'm not used to sleeping by myself, but it sure will be nice."

Owens, 64, will move into an apartment near Interstate 35 and Seminary Drive in Fort Worth in early March. He says he is most excited about living alone and regaining control of his life - also the luxuries he didn't have while staying in the Shelter such as controlling the TV remote and cooking his own meals.

Owens' apartment is the first step toward his new life, he said.

"I always wanted to get off drugs and get off the streets," he said. "I wanted a better life and now I have one."

The Blitz program is coming to an end, Henry said, but PNS residents will continue to move out. Thirteen residents separate from the Blitz program have moved since November and more are scheduled to move in upcoming months.
